"Jus in Bellow"...

Sam and Dean break into Bela's (Lauren Cohan) apartment in order to get the Colt back, but she has tipped off Agent Henricksen (guest star C. Malik Whitfield) about their whereabouts and they are arrested. While Sam and Dean are locked in a cell in Colorado, a demon breaks in and kills some of the sheriff's men and possesses Henricksen. After the guys vanquish the demon, the FBI agent realizes they were telling the truth and prepares to release them, but Ruby (guest star Katie Cassidy) shows up to a warn Sam and Dean that the jailhouse is surrounded by a band of demons with a powerful new leader who wants Sam dead.

Question: I heard rumors that the CW is switching the 11th and 12th episodes of Supernatural because the 11th will apparently make for a better season finale if the strike continues. Is this true? — TK
Ausiello: Well, it's true that they're strongly considering making Episode 11 the "season finale," but I'm not certain a final decision has been made. Based on what I'm hearing about 11 — "It's awesome" "OMG!" "Frak me!" — I can understand why they'd want to end the season with it. Apparently, the eppy's climax involves Sam, Dean and a slew of dead bodies.

What's here is an in-depth spoilery Q&A with show runner Eric Kripke! Also, here's what Kripke says about Dean's impending trip to Hades...Yes, you heard me, hell! "The episode 'Mystery Spot' is airing on Valentine’s Day, I think. And 'Mystery Spot' is a Groundhog’s Day episode where Sam keeps reliving the same Tuesday over and over and over again, and at the end of every Tuesday Dean dies. And no matter what, it’s actually a pretty funny episode. We killed Dean in every conceivable way. He gets electrocuted, he gets botulism, he’s hit by a car, he’s crushed by a desk, you know he’s shot a couple of times, he’s hit with an arrow. It's a totally fun episode. It’s actually kind of meaningful, and we play—I think it hits what Supernatural does best, it’s funny one moment and emotional the next. This obviously freaks the hell out of Sam, having to watch Dean die over and over again."

Eric Kripe reveals: We also have a great Groundhog day episode coming up. Sam basically wakes up every day and it's the same day and Dean dies at the end of every single day. It's actually quite funny. Dean dies maybe 10 different ways on camera, and off camera, maybe he dies 200 different ways. Sam doesn't go through just three or four Tuesdays, he goes through something like 150 Tuesdays.

That changes 180 percent in Episode 10. Something big happens to him that makes him realize he desperately wants to live and he desperately doesn't want to go to Hell. [...] Bella makes an appearance in a dream episode, where Sam and Dean take this medicine man drug where they go dream walking, which is going into other peoples' dreams. Creator Hints at what to come in Season 3...

One of the most exciting holiday themed episodes airing this year is tonight's Supernatural, where Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) have to battle an evil version of Santa Claus. In a recent interview with TV Guide, creator Eric Kripke revealed that "we wanted to be the first, and I'd imagine only, Christmas special complete with impalements, cannibalism and torture scenes." Kripke also dropped hints about some revelations that will be seen in tonight's show, as well as what fans can expect in new episodes once the writers' strike wraps up.

"What I really rub my hands together in glee about is that we are far and away the most violent Christmas special in the history of television," Kripke stated. "One of the things I'm really proud of in this episode is that the legend is one of our most accurate, not just in discussion of the anti-Claus, but also when you research Christmas you discover that the vast majority of Christmas traditions are actually pagan. So is Easter."

However, not everything in the episode is gory and meant to scar little children. There are also flashbacks to the young Winchesters, which should enlighten fans who have been craving a bit more backstory.

"To be able to tell the story of the day that Sam lost his innocence, not just that there was no such thing as Santa Claus, but that there was such a thing as everything else, was too good an opportunity to pass up," Kripke continued. "[The flashback] explains where Dean got his necklace that he wears in every single episode. It explains the beginning of Sam's estrangement from his father and his indoctrination into the supernatural world. It's quite a big moment."

After tonight's Christmas special, Supernatural only has four completed episodes remaining before it will be effected by the writers' strike. Kripke teases that in the final four, "We actually spend a little more time with how Dean himself feels about going to Hell, because right now he's accepting that he's going to Hell and he's unwilling to do anything to stop it. That changes 180 percent in Episode 10. Something big happens to him that makes him realize he desperately wants to live and he desperately doesn't want to go to Hell."

Kripke admits that if the strike isn't resolved by 2008, he'll have to figure out a way to scale back the season. However, he already has big plans for post-strike episodes. "There's a fun one where we bring back the Hellhounds, the bumbling ghost hunters back from Season 1. The whole show is an episode of their reality show. So we're shooting an entire show on hand-held video Blair Witch-style. Like when X-Files did their episode of Cops. It's our loving tribute to Ghosthunters on Sci Fi."

Sure, Virginia! Make way for Scoopy Claus. In "A Very Supernatural Christmas," Sam and Dean try to figure out what has been causing people to be kidnapped through their chimneys. Dean is also determined to have one final Christmas celebration, and we get flashbacks of how Sam and Dean used to spend their Christmastime. We learn who gave Dean his amulet, and for whom it was originally intended. Also, there is a hysterical scene in the next episode involving a "Santa," a huge bong and holiday-themed porn, which is possibly one of the most hilarious moments of the series so far. But there is also some decidedly unfunny torture that goes down in the same ep, which is not for the squeamish. And yes, the victim is one of the bros.

A Very Supernatural Christmas...

It's Christmas time and Sam and Dean investigate a series of murders where the victims were pulled up through the chimney. Sam realizes they are dealing with a sort of Anti-Santa, a demon with roots in pagan lore. Dean wants to celebrate Christmas the old fashioned way as this is his last, but Sam refuses, not wanting to accept that Dean won't be around next year. Sam flashes back to a certain Christmas when he waited for his father to come home to give him a special gift.

Ausiello: TV Guide's HR policy strictly forbids me from negotiating with terrorists, but I suppose I could make an exception just this once. Here's your answer, courtesy of Supernatural creator Eric Kripke: "We have a firm belief in the cosmology of this show that evil, in terms of demons, etc, is very tangible and real and out there. Angels and supernatural forces of good are much more elusive. But in my opinion — and the opinion of the writers — if God is out there, he isn't sending angels to fight the battles; he's working through a very human, sweaty, outgunned and overwhelmed group of hunters. For us, these are the angels. I think the point that's very important to us to make is that the forces of good work through humans who are flawed and imperfect and trying to make the right decisions. And that's the way God works. So we try to present that."

Katie Cassidy reveals: Most of Ruby's scenes have been with Sam up to this point, but Dean and Ruby end up working together in an upcoming episode. There's going to be something the two of us basically have to overcome. [...] And she's very manipulative and she wants something from the boys, but we don't know exactly what that is yet. [The producers] actually haven't told me much. I definitely have my own ideas about what her motives are, but I don't want to give anything away! But I will say that the next episode that Ruby appears in, you'll see a different side of her, a more genuine side. I'm really excited about it, so I hope people enjoy it. She's got a lot of different flavors going on.

Agent Henriksen from the FBI descends on small town Monument, Colorado and captures Sam and Dean. He takes over the police station, even letting the one prisoner go, warning the Sheriff that they are the most dangerous criminals he will have ever met. He has his man lead them shackled into the station and the holding cell, leaving them shackled together. When demons attack the police station, killing the Henriksen's partner and several policemen, he blames Sam and Dean, believing they have friends coming to get them out. They try to tell him it's demons and everyone is in danger but he refuses to listen. Ruby finds them and comes up with a solution that no one believes in, forcing them to come up with a better solution.

Jared Padalecki reveals: In a few weeks, Gordon, played by Sterling K. Brown , who we love, comes back. He's been hunting for Sam now that he's found out he's not all human. What's going to happen to stop him is very interesting. If you remember, the Yellow-eyed Demon said to Dean, "Are you sure what you brought back is 100 percent Sam?" Keep an eye on Sam and notice the difference between Season 1 and what he does now in Season 3. It might be hinting toward something.

Dean dresses in a suit and tie, pretending to be a detective, when he goes to interview students and faculty at a college. He asks one stoner student about the death of Dr. Gregg and the sleep study he was conducting, testing a treatment for a sleep disorder. The student has the inability to dream and says he quit after one session with Dr. Gregg because the stuff he gave him caused him to have a very weird, super intense dream, much like an acid trip. Bobby, Sam and Dean all get trapped in their dreams and figure out that the one causing it is Jeremy, the stoner student Dean questioned.

The Winchester brothers of the CW's Supernatural have battled a variety of villains from the underworld, including vampires, vengeful ghosts, poltergeists and a horde of demons. This season is no different, with the brothers already going up against the Seven Deadly Sins, a pack of demons representing the human vices, and the Changelings, creatures who have taken the form of homicidal children.

Seeing as Supernatural just returned to the small screen, viewers can expect to see a lot more evil characters making their way into the show, one of whom happens to be one of the most popular maniacal villains on the big screen.

Warning, spoilers ahead.

According to series creator Eric Kripke, Jason Vorhees from the Friday the 13th film series, will be making an appearance, though he will be slightly different from the creepy serial killer that terrorized thrill-seeking teens on the big screen.

"We have Jason from Friday the 13th, the character with the hockey mask," Kripke told Cult Times. "He shows up in Episode 10. We have cleared the rights to actually use Jason. We have a twist on it so it is not really Jason out there, but we found an interesting way to bring him in so Sam [Jared Padalecki] and Dean [Jensen Ackles] fight Jason from Friday the 13th. In our world, that is a pretty cool guest star."

While Kripke is excited to have such an icon from the horror genre gracing Supernatural, he is even more wound up with the series' special Christmas episode entitled “A Very Supernatural Christmas.”

In the episode, the brothers find themselves battling a creature that “comes down chimneys, stuffs you in a leather bag, takes you up the chimney and eats you.” The creature is an anti-Santa Claus of sorts, though he works in relatively the same way as the red and jolly Holiday icon: he doesn't come to people who are good, but punishes the ones who are bad.

"It is our version of the Christmas cheer,” Kripke said. “Our teaser is grandpa dressed as Santa, putting presents under the tree, the kids are watching from the stairs, and this monster comes down from the chimney, slaughters this guy, and drags him up the chimney. Then the teaser out is the kids saying, ‘Santa?'… I am so excited. In the first two minutes we are killing Santa in the most violent manner.”

The boys figure out that Tammi is a demon. She puts a spell on Dean to slowly kill him. When Sam goes to the meeting to force the women to lift the spell, Tammi holds Sam against the wall with a demonic force and kills another of the women by snapping her neck with her mind. Ruby saves Dean's life by making him drink a vile liquid then surprises them with her connection to demon-Tammi.

Supernatural has been an exciting and fun show since it began, but one thing it hasn't been is very female-centric. The only two regular cast members are men and while there have been some recurring female characters on the series, most of the main demon hunting and fighting has been left to brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles).

Things are about to change a bit in Season 3 of the series however, with the introduction of two new recurring female characters, Ruby and Bela, who are both as tough and ready for battle as Sam and Dean are, albeit with agendas of their own. Just a few days before they began work on Supernatural, I spoke to the actresses playing these two new roles, Katie Cassidy (Ruby) and Lauren Kohan (Bela), to find out more about their characters and what their dynamic will be on the series.

Cassidy described Ruby as "a total bad ass, kick ass character." And while she said there would indeed be some "teaming up with the boys," Cassidy also said Ruby is "a little bit manipulative. She likes to stir up a little bit of trouble and always wants to be in control of the situation. She knows what she wants and wants to go out and get it. She's always five, ten steps ahead of everybody else and she's ready to just go out there and show them what she's got."

Cohan explained that Bela "is basically a mercenary. It's a really fun character." She remarked that "[Supernatural executive producer] Eric Kripke and I decided that she was a female Humphrey Bogart, because she's very much out for herself. It's about the money, it's about the goods, it's about serving higher powers who need certain results and other characters having to do with demons."

While Ruby is a demon hunter, Cohan said Bela "doesn't kill demons unless she absolutely has to. Bela's not interested in killing anybody. Bela is interested in getting goods from one place to another. She doesn't want to shed blood or break any bones If she doesn't have to, but she most definitely can if need be, so that's where she's coming from." Cohan added that "I don't get the impression that Bela's violent from the start, but I hope they're going to write in some butt kicking." She then noted that given what occurs on the show, when it comes to fighting "I think it's unavoidable."

Cassidy said that Ruby's encounters with Sam and Dean will likely be a combination of running into them and sometimes traveling with them, but notes that there is also a bit of a rivalry there. "She knows she's the best," said Cassidy, adding her character's attitude towards Sam and Dean is "I'll take you down if I have to." Staying secretive, Cohan couldn't reveal much about what brings Bela into contact with Sam and Dean, but that "she comes from a very different place, so their meeting is unpredictable."

When it comes to fight scenes on the show, Cassidy revealed, "I just had sword training and that was awesome. It was really fun, so I'm really looking forward to it." I asked Cassidy if that would be the weapon of choice for her character, and she replied, "As of right now, I know I use a sword, but that might change. Who knows?"

Cassidy said she definitely loves the type of genre material she'll be getting to play in Supernatural, including the action scenes. "I've done thrillers and I've done a horror movie and definitely want to do an action movie, more than anything. And I used to be a gymnast, so it all kind of leads into one another. It's really fun and I enjoy it and it's cool." And might that gymnast training come into play for the role of Ruby? "I hope so! I really hope so," said Cassidy.

Cohan also has previous experience to call on if need be, noting, "I had [fight] training when I was in theater school, and then I had to learn to do a lot of fencing for the last film that I just did, so I'm well equipped with swords and a lot of instruments; sharp instruments." She said that doing that kind of work is "so fun. It just reminds me of being about nine years old and having your favorite hobby and running off to school to play basketball or do kickboxing or something like that and it's just really exciting. You just feel like a kid when you get go to fencing classes and stuff like that." However, she added, "It's hard work! You tear your muscles, and you remember when you do!"

Commenting on some of the impressive special effects and makeup used so often on Supernatural, Cassidy said, "I was in the production office last week and I saw pictures of some of the characters, when they're scary. I was horrified and at the same time shocked, because I was like 'That is so awesome! But at the same time, that's disgusting!' But it was really cool to see and watch how they do it. It's really fun." As for the outfits she'll be wearing, Cassidy remarked, "They're very Angelina Jolie-inspired. So I am stoked about that, because she is so hot and so sexy, and she is one woman I look up to."

Cohan also felt that the makeup and effects were a fun aspect of the show, but admitted that for her "It's a little scary. I mean I have a weak stomach for that stuff. Not too weak; I'm fine. But I watched some Supernatural when I was home alone the other night and I had to wait until one of my girlfriends comes in because I need to watch it with someone! I almost cried in Sin City! But the special effects are great [on Supernatural]. I was just watching the first episode with the woman in white. I thought that was really cool."

I remarked that Supernatural had been a pretty masculine show until now, and Cohan replied, "It's interesting that you say that it's a masculine show, because I think that something that both Bela and Ruby have is a certain, maybe not masculinity, but self-sufficiency and independence, and I think that's an exciting kind of woman to bring into this."

Cohan noted that the movie she learned how to fence for was an unlikely one: Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj, and laughed as she said, "It was a comedy, but it was very serious fencing training!" She then added "Actually, for my first movie, I learned archery and for Van Wilder I learned fencing. It's kind of fun being an actor in that way. You feel like someone could drop you in the Amazon and you might just be able to make it."

Dixon - a vampire. He manages to capture Gordon, a well-known vampire hunter. Dixon hates hunters, since they murdered his wife and his vampire family, and he felt that the ultimate revenge would be to get a hunter the level of Gordon and make him lunch for his new "vampires". However, after Gordon taunts him, Dixon has a better idea - to make Gordon a vampire himself. However, it does not work out like Dixon planned it. When Sam and Dean enter to "rescue" Gordon they find Dixon crying over the decapitated corpses of his two new female vampires. Dixon tells them what he did, and while they are not sympathetic at first Dean does empathize with Dixon when he says how he feels that he has nothing left - that his life was over. He cannot face immortality like this, and he begs Dean and Sam to finish him off.

For two seasons, Supernatural has focused on Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester while they hit the road to search for their missing father and confront various demons along the way. As it heads into the third season, the show adds two new regulars to spice up the paranormal horror plot. This, however, has created much buzz among its fans. But rest assured, the Winchester brothers will remain to be the center of attention.

According to Sera Gamble, one of the writers and executive producers of Supernatural, the writers will be talking about the new additions, Ruby (Katie Cassidy) and Bela (Lauren Cohan) while assuring the continuing importance of the Winchester brothers. She also says the season 3 is all about discovery and bringing something different out of the brothers.

“Sam and Dean are the two main characters of the show…that's how we approach every single episode,” Gamble told Eclipse Magazine. “The new characters give me the chance to discover all new things about our guys.”

“Ruby and Bela tend to fit into different kinds of stories, at least in the first part of the new season,” Gamble said. “Ruby plays a role in the hunter war, while Bela begins her arc as more of a supernatural opportunist who couldn't care less about hunting.”

Nevertheless, she understands the negative sentiments of some fans to the announcement of these two new characters.

“I have to say, I know fans are really worried about the new characters, and I do get where they're coming from,” she told Eclipse Magazine. “I've watched shows and been way annoyed by new characters. But I think people are going to dig Ruby and Bela more than they expect to. At least I hope so, because we've been having lots of fun writing them. [Show writer] Ben Edlund wrote the episode that introduces Bela. I was laughing so hard I was crying when we broke that story. She puts the boys in such a deliciously bad situation. I'm hoping that our audience will appreciate the new elements Bela and Ruby bring into the boys' stories. It's good stuff. I believe they represent a deepening and an expansion of the world we're already in. They support the story we're telling this season, rather than distracting from it. Even though they're hot chicks.”

Like Gamble, Padalecki also has some positive views on the addition of the girls.

“It's not Scooby Doo and go fight crime together,” the actor explained referring to Cassidy and Cohan. “But I think after they watch a few episode with the girls all their fears will be thrown out their windows. I think they'll really like the performances and they'll really like the characters. It's nice to have some more people to mix things up.”

Supernatural season 3 premieres on October 4 on The CW.

Stars to attend Convention...

Creation Entertainment, a company that produces conventions for fans of genre film and television, is holding a tribute convention in November. Among the shows that the company is saluting is the CW's Supernatural, and according to their website, series stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles will be attending the event.

On the paranormal drama, Padalecki and Ackles portray brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, respectively. Sam is known to be rational and sensitive, qualities that distinguish him from Dean. Sam and Dean are demon hunters, a profession they inherited from their father. Towards the end of the previous season, Dean makes a deal with a demon in order to bring back Sam from the dead.

Also attending the convention as special guests are Fredric Lehne and Samantha Ferris. Both actors also appear in Supernatural, with Lehne playing the Yellow-Eyed Demon and Ferris playing Ellen Harvelle.

Joining Padalecki, Ackles, Lehne and Ferris at the convention are Nicholas Brendon and Steve Carlson. Brendon is most known for his portrayal of Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, while Carlson has been heard in soundtracks of various films and television series, including Supernatural.

Many of the guest celebrities are expected to entertain questions from the audience while they are on stage.

Additionally, the company is also hosting a video contest that will have fans submitting their own music videos of the featured shows. Entries will be judged according to the quality of the video, audio and editing, inventiveness, song selection and originality. Winners will be announced during the convention and will be given $100 gift checks courtesy of Creation Entertainment.

The convention will be held at the Hyatt Regency Woodfield in Chicago, from November 10-11. The company has reserved a block of rooms at the hotel for attendees.

One of the over arcing issues for the Winchester brothers as they enter Supernatural season 3 is the deal that turned the hour glass on Dean's life. If left unresolved, Dean has to die. Naturally, this little problem is going to an imperative to the story. But, when, and how Dean (Jensen Ackles) can escape from the bargain is not known, yet. Some recent spoilers, on the other hand, suggest that the resolution have some sometime early in the first half of Supernatural's third season. Spoilers ahead.

In the episode “Bedtime Stories,” set to debut in November, Sam will take up the cause to reverse Dean's deal when he confronts the crossroads demon and tries to barter a release. The crossroads demon has an interesting reason for denying the request, it turns out the demon doesn't have the authority. Sam (Jared Padalecki) will shot the crossroads demon's human host after he learns that there is higher up pulling her strings.

This could equate, in some degree, to the endgame of the season. If the demon is one of those released during last seasons finale, no diversion would be necessary to track it down, and the confrontation could make for a heck of cliff hanger with Dean's life hanging in the balance.

On the speculative side of things, it would not be surprising at all to see Dean actually die before the finale ends, leaving significant buzz over whether or not the character would return in the subsequent season. That kind of buzz could be helpful if Supernatural finds itself sitting on the bubble once again.

Of course, it would not at all be surprising for this issue to be dealt with well in advance of the finale to allow a larger, more globally threatening end game emerge. But, that is still a long ways away. Supernatural's premiere, on the other hand, is just a little more than a month away: Thursday, October 4.

Returns to It's Sterialized roots...

With the premiere of Supernatural right around the corner, we are starting to ponder whether this shift back to the serialized format will be a positive thing for the show, or a negative. On one hand, season 2 was insanely entertaining and some of the episodic attempts were on the level with the best shows in the genre, bar none. On the other hand, some attempts to work back into the serialized mythos seemed like put offs. Will the serialized emphasis leave room for the creative diversions of season 2?

While more seasoned genre fans smirked at season 2's ‘junior X-Files' approach, even the most brittle of horror fans can't help but admit that Supernatural is the only show bringing imaginative dark themed stories to the tube week after week.

The move away from serialization was probably one of the smartest moves they ever made, and proved that the creative team was definitely quicker on their feet. During Supernatural's first season, several attempts to cash in on the Lost serial magic – Threshold, Surface, Night Stalker, and Invasion to name a few – fell flat. Supernatural was one of the few to escape with a second season.

Part of that luck came from the nebulous realm of subject matter that Supernatural dealt with. Pundits argue that even though Supernatural had an underlying serial mythology, it was always episodic in the sense that the manifestations dealt with on a week to week basis were of a unique nature. Rather than have an event committed plot, Supernatural had the ability to explore its underlying woes in whatever setting they chose.

The move to the episodic, mini-movie structure would be almost transparent to fans who didn't really engage with the underlying plot anyways. Now that the series is back to tackling that imperative, viewers will not have the option of putting that plot away, but they can still expect the way it is dealt with, and where, to be an unexpected factor in the show.
